Pony, a Pit Bull mix rescued by Rocket Dog (https://www.rocketdogrescue.org/) based in Oakland from a cruelty (dog-fighting) situation, was a big hit in the fifth-grade class at Beechwood School (http://www.beechwoodschool.org/) in Menlo Park engaged in a project-based learning program sponsored by PAHS focusing on helping animals in the community. Andy and Barbara from Rocket Dog talked at length about Pit Bulls—truths and myths and rescue efforts—and explained how a dog rescue organization works. Pony is Andy’s canine companion. The Palo Alto Humane Society is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit, charitable, volunteer-supported organization. PAHS is one of the few humane societies nationwide with no animal shelter. Instead of managing animals inside a shelter, we work to keep animals out of the shelter through humane programs in intervention, advocacy, and education. For a century, our mission has been to alleviate the suffering of animals, increase public sensitivity to animal issues, and elevate the status of animals in our society.
