Accidents happen.

Veterinary care can be alarmingly expensive.

Palo Alto Humane believes that no family should have to choose between caring for a beloved pet and an unaffordable vet bill.

The Emergency Veterinary Help Program provides financial assistance for people facing unmanageable and urgent veterinary expenses for their pets. We pay directly to veterinary clinics and do our best to help as many animals as possible. To read the eligibility requirements and apply for Emergency Veterinary Help, please click here.

Palo Alto Humane believes all animals deserve care and compassion – even those who may not have a home. Emergency Veterinary Help also includes help for community animals, or animals who may not have a human family to care for them. EMERGENCY VETERINARY HELP

Your pet must meet all of these eligibility requirements:

    1. Be a companion animal.
    2. Have an immediate, life-threatening or life-compromising injury or illness.
    3. Have a good to excellent prognosis after receiving this single treatment, surgery, or procedure (both short- and long-term, as determined by a veterinarian).

Pet parents or guardians must meet all of the following eligibility requirements:

    1. Be a resident of Santa Clara County.
    2. Be 18 years of age or older.
    3. Have not received any previous assistance from Palo Alto Humane within the last 12 months.

All eligible family members have been rejected from Care Credit and ScratchPay. You’ll be required to upload proof of denial as part of the application process.

If you are approved for credit from Care Credit and/or ScratchPay, that credit MUST be used towards any tests for diagnosing your pet prior to applying for a grant, and/or used towards your pet’s procedure. Palo Alto Humane grants can fill in a gap between what credit has been offered through these services and your veterinarian’s estimate, but cannot be used instead of using any credit line offered.

To apply, you will need to submit the following:

    1. Personal Identification (such as Driver’s License, State-issued ID card, or Social Security card).
    2. Proof of low income (such as Social Security, disability records, unemployment pay stubs, or three months of payroll stubs, etc.).
    3. Photographs of your animal.

If you meet the eligibility requirements, please complete the application HERE.

Palo Alto Humane is not responsible for the outcome of the veterinary care provided and has no further financial responsibility regarding the care of your pet.
    • If estimated expenses are unusually high, we will ask you to consider a more financially practical option (amputation instead of reconstructive surgery, for instance).

Daisy’s Dream

Daisy’s dream is that families will not have to surrender or euthanize their pet due to insurmountable veterinary bills.

Daisy was an adored Labrador/Shepherd mix who was rescued from a nearby shelter by a local Stanford family. When Daisy’s family took her home, she was skinny, timid and skittish. She had likely been a stray most of her life. Thanks to a single family’s love, Daisy’s life was completely transformed. She gained weight, her fur grew long and shiny, and she made many friends–both human and canine! She lounged with her family on couches for movie night, took many road trips with them, and slept at the foot of her human sibling’s bed.

When Daisy was 11 years old, her family noticed a mass on her leg, which the vet diagnosed as an aggressive form of cancer.  Months of treatment ensued, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Daisy’s vet bills climbed steadily and her family was grateful they were able to afford the recommended care for their beloved pet so that she could live a full and comfortable life.

Daisy’s family generously made a large contribution to Palo Alto Humane in Daisy’s honor. Today, many people continue this spirit by contributing to help animals who otherwise might not receive the critical veterinary care they need and deserve.

Please consider making a donation in honor of Daisy – or your own beloved pet – to help more pets and their families!
