URGENT ALERT—IRRUPTION* OF PINE SISKINS!

*irruption—sudden large increase of birds

Pine Siskins are mobbing feeders in large numbers up and down the West coast and spreading salmonella. They are dying and infecting other bird species.

Bird experts such as Finch Network, PAWS (Washington state) and Audubon chapters throughout the state(s) have requested the removal of bird feeders for at least 3 weeks. Clean and disinfect all feeders. Wash nearby surfaces and rake the ground around the feeders. Wear gloves if possible.

Indications of sick birds: “puffed-up” appearance, lethargic (seems “sleepy”), perching for long periods of time at edge of birdbath/water, or all of the above.

Keep birdbaths and sources of water scrupulously clean.
