FDA’s Draft Guidance for Industry #256, Compounding Animal Drugs from Bulk Drug Substances, would force pharmacies and veterinarians to make custom pet medications from finished goods purchased from pharmaceutical companies. If enacted, this would decrease quality, increase costs by an average of 300%, and dramatically reduce the availability of compounded medications that are regularly prescribed and prepared by 99.4% of veterinarians. The result: unnecessary animal suffering and death.
