Last Saturday, I traveled to Butte County to help with the animals affected by the Camp Fire. The fires in California this year have been devastating and life-changing for many. As a staff member of Palo Alto Humane Society,
I was sworn in as a volunteer for Butte County. I was then sent to the Animal EOC center in Oroville. Photos of the animals under care or people are prohibited. I helped document all the cats in one room and also ready a room in one of the cottages for incoming cats. Dozens of volunteers from all over are working together to help: Oregon Humane Society, Silicon Valley Animal Control, Chico State students, etc . Trained staff from Butte County, ASPCA and North Valley Animal Disaster Group conduct intake and logistics. Vets and vet techs administering all levels of care. Every animal has a number and is documented continuously: eating, pooing, demeanor, etc. Almost 300 cats are here; 160+ dogs, 7 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs and some exotic birds. I witnessed a very tearful reunion of a family and their two cats – whom they hadn't seen for 3 weeks! The cats were uninjured. Many animals are "claimed" by their owners, but many are not. All these animals will need ongoing care and food for some time. Thank you for all your support during this very difficult time.
