Yes on Proposition 2

This Election Day, you and I will have an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help millions of animals by voting Yes on Proposition 2 (http://yesonprop2.com/). If passed, the initiative will improve living conditions for 20 million farm animals in the state by banning the most inhumane practices in factory farming.

Proposition 2 is simple. It would require that farm animals be given enough room to turn around, lie down, stand up, and stretch their limbs. In effect, Prop 2 would phase out three of the most appalling practices standard in factory farming: veal crates for calves, gestation crates for sows, and battery cages for egg-laying hens. These practices have already been banned in the European Union and in other states.

In endorsing Proposition 2, the Palo Alto Humane Society joins other prominent supporters, including the California Veterinary Medical Association, the California Democratic Party, Sierra Club California, Clean Water Action, Center for Food Safety, Union of Concerned Scientists, Consumer Federation of America, California Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein, and Palo Alto Vice Mayor Peter Drekmeier and Councilmember Yoriko Kishimoto.

At the Palo Alto Humane Society, we are excited to share our centennial with this phenomenal proposition. Let’s continue our rich, 100-year history of compassion and kindness by taking a stand for animal welfare this Election Day and affirming that all animals deserve to be treated humanely. As we greet the dawn of a new century of advocacy, let’s wave goodbye to the worst cruelties of factory farming by voting yes on Proposition 2.

We will need to work hard to bring home a victory for the animals on November 4th. Agribusiness interests are spending millions to propagate misleading claims against the proposition. Please spread the word to family and friends and consider making a donation to the campaign. Every dollar will help expose voters to the cruelties of factory farming and the promise of Proposition 2 for animal welfare.
