Andy Needs an Angel
Andy’s mom, Nancy, appeals below. Posted in January, 2010.
“Andy was rescued as a three week old feral kitten in 2001 along with his sister and brother. With good food and good care, he grew into an elegant, black American long-haired kitty with the very best manners and disposition, a treasure in our home. When my husband died of cancer last year without life insurance, we (six kitties rescued as feral kittens from the same family line as Andy, a 14 year old dog rescued as a pup on the streets of San Jose and I) began the long process of re-locating from the Bay Area to another state to live near my sister. On November 18th, I noticed that Andy was vomiting clear liquid, had a rough coat and did not look well. He was hospitalized after being diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis which is basically liver failure due to fat stores coming off the body too quickly due to not eating. He spent three days in the hospital receiving fluids and antibiotics. At that point, due to my financial situation, the veterinarian and I agreed on a conservative treatment plan where I would bring Andy home and continue around-the-clock care for him myself. This included feeding him every two hours and giving sub-cutaneous fluids. It was a challenging task for me as I have sleep apnea, but I wanted Andy to have every chance to get well. At the vet’s urging, Andy also had an ultrasound to rule out any catastrophic problems in his body.
Now, a month later, Andy is much better. He is eating and drinking some on his own with me helping him only to finish the end of his meals. His ultrasound revealed no abnormalities except hepatic lipidosis. His liver function test results, while still elevated far above normal, are dropping.
Clearly, Andy has the will to live and I have the will to help him. But the cost for his medical care has been high. He will require some continuing monitoring and treatment. Each blood test is $90. Each case of the special food he is requiring is $40. Each bag of fluids and catheters is $65. Each re-check with the veterinarian is $32. In order for me to be sure that Andy, the other rescued animals in my care and I can continue on, I must ask for help.
The Palo Alto Humane Society is administering Andy’s Fund. Anything that you might be able to give to resolve Andy’s existing veterinarian bill or help with his continuing treatment may be sent directly to the Palo Alto Humane Society. Please be sure to note that your donation is for Andy’s fund. Thank you so much from Andy and from me for helping us.”
